Stroller vs Pram: 3 Key Differences
Many people use stroller, pram, and buggy interchangeably. But there are actually differences to them.
Knowing their differences can help you decide which to buy.
Strollers versus Prams
1 – Usability
Strollers are what you commonly see parents wheel in their babies with. Unless the stroller can lie fully flat, you can’t use it for newborn babies. They are more suitable for babies who are old enough to sit.
Perambulator or Prams allow babies to fully recline. This is why they’re also called the lay-flat baby carriage. And some call them bassinets.
A pram’s design is ideal for newborn babies who can’t support their head yet until they’re six months old. Most prams can be used until they weigh 35 – 40 lbs. Check the pram’s specifications for this.
2 – Different Types
Strollers have different varieties. So you can choose the kind of stroller that suits your lifestyle and needs.
Unlike strollers, prams don’t have different types. There’s only one kind of pram.
3 – Disadvantages
Because of the different stroller types, they can meet your different needs. But they’re not safe to use for newborns.
Prams are perfect for newborns. But as your baby grows up, you’ll most likely look for other options. Traditional or old-style prams don’t fold easily. And they’re hard to maneuver.
This is why it’s not a very popular choice among parents.
Convertible Strollers
If you’re looking for something in between, there are convertible strollers.
A convertible stroller has the capacity to recline fully-flat. So, it’s safe for newborn babies.
You can also convert it into a car seat.
Features to Look For
Whether you’re looking for a pram or a stroller, here are features you’ll want to have:
- Right size and weight
Make sure the stroller can fit in the storage compartment of your car. Fold and unfold it to see how big it really is. And carry it to see if it’s manageable for you.
- A good set of wheels
Are the easy to maneuver? Larger wheels tend to give a more comfortable ride.
- Reliable brakes
It’s easy to understand why the locks need to be reliable. Also, the locks must be easy for you to engage even with just one hand. When you have a baby, you’ll often find your hands full – literally. So it will be a big help if your stroller is easy to manage.
- A five-point harness
A five-point-harness can give the most protection even when you’re in motion. It consists of two shoulder straps, a waist strap, and a crotch strap. It should be easy for adults to buckle and unbuckle but not for kids.
- A reversible handle
This is an essential feature you’ll want to have. It’s good to have the option to put the handlebar wherever it’s convenient for you at the moment. Most of the time the handlebar is at the back. But it would be good to be able to see your baby as you’re pushing them.
- A wide canopy
A canopy will protect your baby from the heat of the sun, harsh winds, or a light drizzle. So, it’s important that the canopy is wide enough to give sufficient shade. And it should be adjustable.
- A Storage Basket
Going out with your baby comes with bringing a lot of stuff – diapers, extra clothes, feeding bottles, and the list goes on… Having a storage basket provides a place for you to keep them neatly.
