11 Tips to Choosing the Right office Chair
There are so many office chairs being sold in the market today. Choosing the right office chair can be an overwhelming task.
Having a good office chair prevents discomfort and fatigue that you get from sitting long hours.
Not all office chairs are made equal. So here are some features you should look into to find the right one for you.
1 – Adjustable
Experts say a good office chair must be fully adjustable. You should be able to adjust different parts of the chair so your back can be in its natural position and avoid back injuries.
These are the important features you should be able to adjust:
- lumbar support
- armrest (width and height)
- seat back (width and height)
- seat
- tension
2 – Backrest
The backrest should be 12 – 19 inches wide. It should support your lumbar region while following the natural curve of your spine.
Experts also suggest a full back.
If the backrest and seat are not in one piece, you must be able to adjust the height and angle. If they are, you should be able to adjust in forward and back angles, with a sturdy lock to hold it in place.
3 – Lumbar Support
A good office chair must have lower back support. Our lumbar spine has an inward curve.
Without adequate support, your back will be strained and it will also cause you to slouch.
4 – Armrests
The armrests should be adjustable so you can position them in a way your arms and shoulders can relax.
Armrests should be close to the body so your shoulders can relax.
5 – Breathable and Padded Seat Material
It’s important for the material to be breathable so you don’t sweat a lot when sitting long hours.
Having sufficient padding makes your office chair comfortable.
6 – Seat height
The seat height must be adjustable. People’s height differs a lot. Having an adjustable seat allows you to adjust it so your feet can be flat on the floor no matter how tall you are.
7 – Waterfall Seats
Waterfall seats are those that curve in front. This prevents your legs from hurting behind the knee.
8 – Contoured Seats
When the seats are contoured, there is equal weight distribution. This prevents compression in the thighs and buttocks.
Contoured seats also add to the comfort.
9 – Easily Adjustable – No Tools Needed
Office chairs should be easy to adjust without the need for tools. Otherwise, it defeats the purpose of being adjustable.
10 – Swivel Base
If your office chair is able to rotate, you can easily reach for things in any direction. If your office chair cannot swivel freely, your arms will feel tired of having to reach the things you need.
11 – Wheel Base
It’s good to have an office chair that can roll across the room so you don’t have to strain your arms when reaching for something.
If your floor surface is carpeted, choose wheels that work best with carpets.
When choosing the right office chair, it’s a good idea to test it out first. Find out how the chair feels.
