8 Key Features of Electric Bikes You’ll Want to Have
More and more people are making the switch to electric bikes or e-bikes. Or some want to buy one as a second bike.
But how do you choose an electric bike? Here are some features of electric bikes you should pay attention to:
1 – Battery
There are many things to look into with regard to an electric bike’s battery.
Battery Charge Time
Most electric bikes take 3 – 5 hours to fully charge. If you’re planning to use your e-bike as a means for commute, you might need to bring your charger with you always.
Battery Set-up
It matters where the batteries are mounted. Some have batteries built into the frame of the bike. This makes them look sleek and clean.
Others have external batteries, making it easy to charge or replace the batteries.
Voltage
For easy rides on mostly flat terrain, a 36-volt battery will do. If you go up steep roads, climb hills, or you’re on the heavy side, 48 volts will give you the power you need.
Capacity
Battery capacity is measured in amp-hours. The higher the capacity, the greater the range or the farther your bike can go. Most electric bikes’ capacity range from 10 – 20 amp-hours.
2 – Motor Location
Some electric bikes have mid-drive motors where their motor is on the bottom bracket (where the crank arms are attached).
Some bikers prefer this set-up because the weight of the motor in this location gives the bike more balance and stability.
Other bikes have a hub drive motor where the motor is on the rear wheel. They give power straight to the wheel, giving you the ‘push’ you need.
3 – Power Source
Some electric bikes have a pedal-assist feature (pedelec) while others are electric only (throttle).
Most electric bikes come with 3 or 4 assist levels. So you have the option to choose if you want to save on battery power or go fast on turbo mode.
If you want flexibility, choose an e-bike that allows you to use both the pedal and go on full electric mode.
4 – Frame Material and Design
Most electric bikes are made with alloy frames. And there are many made with carbon frames.
Some say your bike’s frame determines your ride quality. So it’s important you choose well.
5 – Weight Limit
Most e-bikes have a weight limit of 300 lbs. But it will be best not to reach that limit.
Otherwise, the bike won’t run as smooth and the motor will overwork itself. With repeated use, it will damage the electric bike.
6 – Light
A good lighting system is a good safety feature to have on any bike.
You should be able to see where you’re going. And you’ll want people and other motorists to see you as well.
7 – LCD Display
You can usually find this on the handlebar. Through this small monitor, you’ll be able to keep track of speed, miles you’ve ridden, battery life, and more.
8 – Smart Phone Integration
One of the benefits of using an electric bike is being able to connect it to your smartphone.
With apps, you’ll be able to access GPS and other digital tools that will come in handy for your rides.
